Description: Tristan Bernard was a playwright, novelist, journalist, and lawyer who wrote for the théâtre de boulevard, a genre meant to entertain middle-class audiences on Sunday afternoons. He had a sharp eye for the ridiculous and keen tendency to deflate pompous characters.
Although much admired for his quick-witted plays, this novel was greatly appreciated by his contemporaries. Early editions include illustrations by Hermann-Paul.

Year: 1903
Description: Alfred Capus began his adult life as the sensible son of a Marseille lawyer. He studied engineering in Paris. In time, he was drawn instead to journalism and later the arts. Yet his scientific training was never far behind. His first published work was an obituary for Charles Darwin.
This novel was first published in 1885 and its theme was existential freedom. In this regard, it owes heavily to the work of Henrik Isben. It went through several printings and Hermann-Paul illustrated the 1903 edition.

It is a large volume of roughly 400 drawings, most in black or sepia. Several span the full frame while most pages feature two to four illustrations.
